THE FULL STORY
FDG provided architectural programming and design services for the development of a 14.2-acre high school athletic complex for the Richmond County Board of Education in Augusta, Georgia, which was completed in January 2004. The final design for the complex resulted from the culmination of ideas and requirements from the school system, principal, facility directors, coaches and community users, blended with contextual motifs and elements derived from the architecture of the existing high school. The site chosen for the Athletic Complex was on a natural downhill plateau from the existing school, which boasted a dramatic panoramic view of the Augusta landscape. Using the existing natural contours, vegetation and land formations of the property, a subtle separation of the Athletic Complex and the High School was achieved while the complementing architecture of the two facilities brought unity to the overall site development.
New facilities included in the Athletic Complex:
- An eight (8) lane, 400-meter track as well as shot put and discus, high jump, pole vault, and long jump field event areas. A football/soccer field was located within the interior perimeter of the track.
- A 2,600 seat pre-engineered bleacher with an enclosed 200 SF conditioned press box was provided on both the home and visitors sides of the complex.
