THE FULL STORY
FDG provided comprehensive design/build services for the Glynn County School System’s new Golden Isles Career Academy. This facility acts as a central home of the County’s vocational and technical training programs, serving providing high school, college, and continuing education programs.
The design of the Career Academy features a pre-engineered steel structural system for maximum flexibility, allowing large open bays with no intermediate columns. This allows for interior spaces to be reconfigured with minimum disruption to the overall building frame. The building’s exterior uses a combination of masonry and stucco wall construction, with the overall design reflecting the prevalent architectural style of the coastal region. The building was configured on the site to preserve existing Live Oak trees, and features an enclosed courtyard in addition to roll-up doors for direct exterior access from the industrial program spaces.
The 100,000 SF building includes large multipurpose rooms, general-use classrooms, and support space for a wide variety of programs including Culinary Arts, Construction, Auto Mechanics, Auto Body Repair, Precision Machining, Welding, Horticulture, Cosmetology, Health Sciences, Dental Hygiene, Computer Technology, and CAD Drafting. Six classrooms are devoted to the County’s Performance Learning Center (PLC) program, offering non-traditional learning approaches for students at the high school level.
