THE FULL STORY

FDG’s educational studio provided comprehensive architectural programming and design services for this 222,657 SF high school. The community will use several of the spaces in the building, namely the 500-seat theatre, gymnasium, cafeteria and athletic fields. This high school has an ultimate core capacity of 1,500 students. The 64-acre site is co-located with an elementary schools and the Walton County School Board Administration Building.

The sloping site leads to a split-level floor plan with the gym being entered from the upper level. The resulting compact design minimizes the footprint of the building and balances the cut and fill requirements. The existing streambed area will remain undisturbed and has been designated for exterior nature studies for the science program. Enclosed courtyards bring light and outdoor education in to the building.

The project benefited from a thorough programming activity involving all curriculum department heads, the Principal, community users, the Facilities Director and the Superintendent. This process greatly influenced the overall design of the built environments and the relationships between academic and support spaces leading to a careful blending between educational requirements and the architectural environment.
