THE FULL STORY
FDG was selected to provide programming, comprehensive architecture, land planning and structural engineering services for the new Southside High School, a 212,000 SF, multi-story facility that accommodates approximately 1,800 students.
This new high school serves as a replacement school to assist in modernizing the District’s facilities, and involved phased construction on the existing school’s site. FDG’s design team had to effectively coordinate with the selected program manager and construction manager to maintain daily operations at the existing school and not disrupt the established school calendar. Once the existing school was demolished, part of the area was converted into parking and two additional athletic practice fields. FDG worked closely with several agencies and stakeholders to ensure compliance and an easy transition, including: Local Board of Education, Superintendent, Building Permit Department, Department of Transportation (road closure), South Carolina State Department of Education, and Local and State Fire Marshalls.
Southside High School was completed in August 2006 and is a 21st Century School that accommodates the required educational program and changing technology needs. This $29 million school took approximately 2 years to complete and remained on time and under project upon completion.
