THE FULL STORY
FDG provided design services for this new $38 million Student Housing, Dining Hall and Structured Parking Garage facility.
The different components of this project (housing, dining and parking areas) are all located in one, 8-story building complex totalling approximately 201,000 SF. Student housing units are designed in three different suite configurations, including 2-, 3-, and 4-bedrooms with bathrooms for a total of 303 beds. Visitor and Resident Associate areas also have a traditional suite-design, but operate independently of student suites. Floors 3-8 also have separate study rooms and lounging areas to accommodate various student activities. To maximize convenience and accessibility, the parking garage is in the same building and has approximately 100 covered spaces for students and staff.
FDG’s design accounted for existing MEP systems, driveways, pedestrian paths and safe accessibility while also incorporating Green Building features to achieve LEED Silver Certification. The Suites became the first residence hall at a historically Black college or university to attain LEED certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. Designed with a priority on conservation, The Suites uses energy, water and other resources more efficiently to help reduce impact on the environment.
