THE FULL STORY
FDG provided architectural services for a new 81,000 square feet elementary school. The original school was constructed in 1932 and this replacement facility incorporates into its design the central pediment entry of the original school, as well as some of the original intricate brick detailing. This facility accommodates 825 students and includes 41 instructional units, a library and a gymnasium / cafeteria / auditorium.
The Media Center is centrally located as the hub of the three academic houses to allow easy accessibility for all classrooms. It features natural lighting throughout and offers students two small study rooms, a reading area and a media production room. The vision windows surrounding the media center provide high visibility from the student circulation routes and the school’s entrance. The gymnasium / cafeteria / auditorium and their support spaces are located for public access after school hours and isolates these noisy areas away from the instructional spaces. Areas can be zoned off both mechanically and physically controlling access to the rest of the school.
